Cathedral of Maria Saal

The mother of all churches in Carinthia - Cathedral of Maria Saal

The cathedral has been shaped for over 2000 years: This late Gothic pilgrimage and collegiate church was the starting point for the second Christianization of Carantania as an original parish in the 8th century. The burial place of the Irish monk Chorbishop Modestus in the collegiate church and on the facade world-famous Roman stone reliefs, inside the cathedral unique frescoes, Gothic carvings and a baroque organ invite those interested. After a devastating fire in 1669, the church received its present appearance during the reconstruction. Carinthia's largest church bell hangs in the north tower.

Since 2018 one can admire a contemporary way of the cross, which in the old moat impressively relates the story of Christ's passion up to the resurrection in relation to the modern reality of life.
