Heinrich Harrer Museum

The museum enables an encounter with foreign cultures and peoples.

Heinrich Harrer, the explorer, athlete, mountaineer and geographer, was born on July 6, 1912 in Knappenberg. His great accomplishments include many first ascents and numerous expeditions. These include distant areas such as Africa, Borneo, Suriname, the Andaman Islands and the Rio Xingu. Heinrich Harrer probably had his most famous adventure in Tibet, which he also recorded in the book “Seven Years in Tibet”. During this time he became a good and longtime friend and advisor to the Dalai Lama and Tibet became his second home.

In the Heinrich Harrer Museum you will find over 5000 fascinating exhibits on an area of 1000 m2, which tell about Heinrich Harrer as a person and about his travels and expeditions. The Tibet section in the museum includes a Buddhist prayer room, which was consecrated in 1992 by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. On the rock wall opposite the museum is the Lingkor, a Tibetan pilgrimage route. Along this circular route you will find symbols and objects of Tibetan Buddhism. This was also consecrated in 2002 by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
